On July 1, 1992, Epperson Waste Disposal became the first contained landfill permitted in Kentucky. On that date, stringent new environmental laws and regulations became effective and Epperson was the first landfill in the state to open under these new laws.

The permit issued by the Kentucky Division of Waste Management for the Epperson Landfill covers 100 acres. The facility is regulated and inspected by the Division of Waste Management and other divisions within Kentucky's Environmental Public Protection Cabinet.

Epperson Waste Disposal is part of a family of companies operated by Republic Services of Kentucky, LLC. Republic Services of Kentucky, which is based in Nicholasville, owns and operates more landfills in Kentucky than any other company. Republic also owns CSI, which collects waste in Grant and surrounding counties, and operates transfer stations in Lexington, Covington and numerous other locations across the state. Altogether, Republic has approximately 600 employees in 70 Kentucky counties.
